What is port drayage

Port drayage is the local trucking move that takes an import container from the port terminal to a warehouse, yard, transload facility or rail ramp. For ABFBA customers, the common lane is Port of Los Angeles or Port of Long Beach into Fontana, Inland Empire and Southern California warehouse markets.

What port drayage includes

A drayage move usually includes terminal pickup, chassis coordination, container movement, warehouse appointment timing and empty return planning. The carrier has to work around last free day, terminal availability, warehouse receiving hours and the weight profile of the container.

Why it matters

A missed pickup or missed warehouse appointment can create demurrage, detention, storage and labor problems. Good drayage is less about one truck trip and more about controlling the whole port-to-warehouse window.

Where ABFBA fits

ABFBA focuses on LA/LB import containers moving into Fontana, Ontario, Rialto, Chino, San Bernardino, Perris, Moreno Valley and nearby warehouse clusters.

FAQ

Common questions

Is drayage the same as long-haul trucking?

No. Drayage is usually a short-haul container move between a port, rail ramp, yard, transload warehouse or nearby receiving location. Long-haul trucking usually moves freight over longer domestic distances after the container has been unloaded or transferred.

What information is needed to quote drayage?

A useful drayage quote needs the terminal or port, container size, gross weight, destination address or ZIP, last free day, appointment window, commodity and whether the load needs direct delivery, pre-pull, yard storage or transload.

Can a container be pulled before the warehouse appointment?

Yes. That is usually called a pre-pull. The container is pulled before the last free day and held at a yard until the warehouse can receive it.

Next step

Send the container, LFD, destination and appointment details to ABFBA.

ABFBA reviews the real operating conditions and confirms whether direct delivery, pre-pull, yard storage or transload is the better plan.
